Recent Notable Issue(s): ): Chameleon appeared as a tragic figure in Webspinners Tales of Spider-Man #10-2 (1999), his life seemingly over in a mess of identities. When Spider-Man confronted him, Chameleon admitted that he loved him and leapt off a bridge to his “death”.
Character Synopsis:Dmitri Smerdyakov is half-brother of Kraven The Hunter and one of Spidey’s oldest enemies. With the power to change his appearance and voice and a devious mind, Chameleon has avoided physical confrontation in the past and has generally been the mastermind behind plots. Chameleon has always tried to get inside the mind of Spider-Man but as his own mind and his own identity started to break down after discovering the link between himself and Kraven, Chameleon has been written as a desperate character. His lowest day had to be when MJ beat him up with a baseball bat in Spectacular #245. Following his “suicide” in Webspinners, Chameleon resurfaced in Get Kraven (2002) and was incarcerated. Sensational Spider-Man #29 sees him free and forming a partnership with Electro (and Scarecrow, Will-O’-The-Wisp and Swarm) to persuade Molten Man to do his bidding – the destruction of Peter Parker, Mary Jane and Aunt May! Whilst others target Peter and MJ, he morphs into Peter and gains access to Avengers Tower and Aunt May! Aunt May figures out that he is not Peter and poisons him with some drug-laced cookies and he is presumably jailed. Another low in the life of the Chameleon...
